30 Sep 2024 IFLG Applauds Governor Newsom for Expanding Access to IVF in California
On September 29th, 2024, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 729 into law. It requires “…large group health care service plan contracts and disability insurance policies to provide coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of infertility and fertility service, including in vitro fertilization (IVF).”
IFLG fully supports family building through assisted reproductive technology (ART) and reproductive freedom. This legislation is a huge step in the right direction. It expands access for those who previously may not have been able to use these technologies, and we encourage other states take note and follow California’s lead, enacting their own laws to expand coverage for infertility treatments, including IVF. Women and men, along with their physicians, should be free to make family building choices free from government restrictions.
As Governor Newsom stated:
“California is a proud reproductive freedom state – and that includes increasing access to fertility services that help those who want to start a family. As Republicans across the country continue to claw back rights and block access to IVF – all while calling themselves ‘the party of families’ – we are proud to help every Californian make their own choices about the family they want.”
At International Fertility Law Group (IFLG), we focus exclusively on assisted reproductive technology law, including surrogacy; egg, sperm, and embryo donation; guardianship, and parentage. If you are considering any of these family building options, our four attorneys with over 80 years of combined experience in fertility law are here to help.
