03 Jun 2021 Cleveland’s ‘3 Things to Know with Stephanie Haney’ Explores Egg Freezing Trend
I was delighted recently to be a featured guest on Cleveland NBC affiliate WKYC’s podcast, “3 Things to Know with Stephanie Haney,” in which the host and I discussed egg freezing as a means of fertility preservation and what women need to know about this growing trend.
As my colleague Rich Vaughn wrote recently, egg freezing has become a hot trend, in part due to the social isolation and disruption of daily life caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
On the podcast, Stephanie and I discuss the upfront costs of the egg-freezing process as well as the subsequent costs for storage (an average $500 to $1,000 per year) and in vitro fertilization if the eggs are used to create and implant an embryo (another $20,000 to $50,000 depending on the clinic and services provided).
Some states, as we discuss on the podcast, have passed laws requiring insurers to offer or certain employers to provide fertility insurance. However, as we reported earlier, many such laws base coverage on outdated definitions of infertility that exclude single women and same-sex couples from qualifying.
Our discussion goes on to cover several other issues women should be aware of when considering egg freezing, including typical success rates, disposition of and rights to any unused eggs or resulting embryos, and how to best legally protect their rights.
As I told Stephanie, egg freezing can be a great way to plan ahead for future parenting, particularly for women whose biological “deadline”—when aging eggs may become less viable—is approaching. Regardless of the significant financial, time and emotional commitment required, egg freezing is increasingly offering women a way to increase their odds of fulling their dreams of parenthood—when the time is right.
