01 Jul 2020 Pride Month Panel: Family Building with Assisted Reproduction for LGBTQ People
Join Rich Vaughn of International Fertility Law Group, Staci Swiderski of Family Source Consultants, and Dr. Brian Kaplan of Fertility Centers of Illinois, along with a surrogate for gay intended parents and a gay dad, for an expert-led discussion on family building for the LGBTQ+ community. This informational webinar is focused towards couples and individuals who are interested in building their family through third party reproduction and assisted reproductive technology.
As Dr. Kaplan, with 29 years experience in the field and more than 20,000 IVF cycles under his belt, points out, the processes of IVF and surrogacy have changed and improved over the past decades. In fact, in 2006, when Vaughn and his spouse were creating their own family via assisted reproduction, best practice called for the fresh transfer of multiple embryos to maximize the chances of a successful pregnancy. Today, most embryos are cryopreserved after fertilization, and standards call for a single implantation. The group also discussed the differences in laws from state to state, the specifics of pre-birth or post-birth parentage orders, and the new diplomatic and bureaucratic processes needed to navigate COVID-19 travel restrictions, as well as other issues facing LGBTQ individuals considering parenthood via in vitro fertilization, egg or sperm donation, and surrogacy.
